On Thursday, the governments of Newfoundland and Labrador and Quebec announced the terms of a MOU for a much anticipated new Churchill Falls agreement. The Premiers also announced plans for new developments in Churchill Falls and to develop and commission Gull Island in 2035. The MOU is expected to be formalized by the provinces in 2026. The LNCC was pleased to join the announcement held in Happy Valley-Goose Bay this morning.
“This is a great deal for the province, one that will further strengthen Labrador’s position as an economic, green and sustainable powerhouse for the county,” says LNCC CEO Julianne Griffin. “This deal will not only increase Labrador’s power capacity, but ensure significant economic benefits to businesses and Labradorians, if developed in alignment and partnership with our region. Labrador is in a strong position to build a skilled workforce, avail of thousands of direct jobs, and ensure a stable power supply for further industrial and business development. This work begins immediately.”
The province is positioned to earn $1 billion per year with further increases beyond 2041. With majority ownership and construction risks now assumed by Quebec, the LNCC believes this is a positive deal to protect the province’s assets and ensure economic prosperity.
“With lessons learned from the development of Muskrat Falls, the Chamber is committed to ensuring ongoing dialogue, consultation and overall benefits to local businesses,” says Griffin. “We look forward to learning more in the coming weeks and months while ensuring consistent engagement with our members.”
