Re: Establishment of Team Labrador & Request for Meeting

  

Dear Minister Evans and Members of Team Labrador:

On behalf of the Labrador North Chamber of Commerce (LNCC), I would like to extend our congratulations to you, MHA Joe Power and MHA Keith Russell on the establishment of Team Labrador.

The creation of Team Labrador comes at an important time for our region. With the recently announced agreements surrounding the development of Churchill Falls and Gull Island, Labrador is facing an unprecedented period of economic opportunity, while also preparing for significant pressures on our communities, infrastructure, workforce and services. We welcome the Government’s commitment to ensuring Labradorians are positioned to benefit from these opportunities and that the impacts of major development are minimized.

The LNCC recently issued a statement welcoming the agreement and highlighting the importance of ensuring the benefits associated with Labrador’s resources translate into meaningful, long-term economic opportunities for Labrador businesses and communities. We identified local procurement, employment and training, infrastructure investment, business growth, regional supply-chain development, energy reliability and equitable partnerships with Indigenous communities as key priorities.

We believe the business community has an important role to play in helping Team Labrador understand both the opportunities and the challenges that lie ahead. Labrador businesses have the knowledge, capacity and experience to contribute significantly to major projects, but early planning and meaningful engagement will be essential to ensure local businesses are prepared to participate and compete.

The LNCC would welcome the opportunity to meet with Team Labrador to discuss the priorities and concerns we are hearing from our members and the broader business community. We would also welcome an opportunity to discuss how the LNCC can support Team Labrador’s engagement with businesses throughout Labrador and contribute to the development of a coordinated approach to regional economic development through its Special Projects Office.

Congratulations once again on the establishment of Team Labrador. We look forward to working collaboratively with you and your colleagues during this important period for Labrador.
