Following the passage of the Churchill Falls resolution in the House of Assembly, the Labrador North Chamber of Commerce (LNCC) is calling for the development and release of a comprehensive engagement plan to ensure businesses, Indigenous and local communities, and other key stakeholders have meaningful opportunities to participate in discussions regarding the project’s future.

The LNCC emphasizes the importance of transparency and timely engagement to ensure communities and businesses are adequately informed and have an opportunity to provide immediate input. The region of Labrador – its people, communities, and businesses – have an expectation for clear commitments prior to the sanctioning of the project.

“Creating community capacity in itself is an economic investment,” says LNCC CEO Julianne Griffin. “We can’t lose sight of the importance of building the foundation to support major developments before the opportunity arrives. This involves developing transferable skills for people and businesses, building infrastructure that supports communities and multiple industries, and ensuring economic benefits reach communities and businesses across the region.”

Projects of this magnitude can be transformational for the province. Access to more power could unlock Labrador’s economic potential across several industries and strengthen Labrador’s regional competitiveness with expanded opportunities. Above all else, stakeholders in Labrador value mutual respect and trust. We must ensure genuine and transparent engagement and joint decision-making to ensure a stronger and sustainable economy. With high expectations, stakeholders will require project proponents to act as long-term corporate citizens.

The LNCC’s focus remains on local benefits and procurement, employment and training, infrastructure investments, and supports for business growth. Through the LNCC’s Special Projects Office, we will continue to meet regularly with regional stakeholders such as the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Mokami Status of Women and the Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership to help support their respective mandates. We look forward to sharing our perspectives and expectations with government soon while advocating for the release of a comprehensive engagement plan.
