Labrador North Chamber of Commerce Welcomes Federal Investment in Northern Defence Infrastructure
Happy Valley-Goose Bay, NL – The Labrador North Chamber of Commerce (LNCC) welcomes the Government of Canada’s announcement of a major investment to strengthen and modernize defence infrastructure across Canada’s North, including upgrades at 5 Wing Goose Bay.
The federal government’s plan to invest approximately $35 billion over the next decade to defend and transform Canada’s North represents a significant commitment to Arctic sovereignty, national security, and the long-term development of northern and Indigenous communities. The program includes critical infrastructure upgrades at Forward Operating Locations in Yellowknife, Inuvik, and Iqaluit, as well as improvements to the Deployed Operating Base at 5 Wing Goose Bay.
By including 5 Wing Goose Bay in this initiative, the federal government acknowledges Labrador’s strategic importance within Canada’s broader northern infrastructure and defence framework. Upgrades will include airfield improvements, new and repurposed aircraft hangars, expanded taxiways and aprons, upgraded fuel and ammunition storage facilities, as well as accommodations, logistics, and information technology infrastructure to support operations in the North.
“These investments not only strengthen Canada’s ability to protect its Arctic sovereignty, but create meaningful economic opportunities to Canada’s North,” says Julianne Griffin, CEO of the LNCC. “The inclusion of Labrador and other Indigenous regions across Canada highlights the impact and strategic significance of this project, creating opportunities for local businesses, contractors, and workers.”
The Chamber noted that major federal infrastructure investments often generate significant regional economic activity through construction, procurement, and long-term operational support.
“As these projects move forward, we encourage the Government of Canada and the Department of National Defence to ensure Labrador businesses have the opportunity to fully participate in procurement opportunities as it relates to defence infrastructure,” says Griffin.
The Labrador North Chamber of Commerce supports initiatives that strengthen northern infrastructure, create employment opportunities, and reinforce the economic resilience of Labrador communities.
