This week the Government of Canada announced its Defence Industrial Strategy, created to ensure a “built in Canada” approach and billions of dollars for Canada’s business community.
Since its creation in 1941, Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Goose Bay continues to support a variety of important operations including both joint and combined training, and the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) operations. CFB Goose Bay is world renowned for its training facilities, adaptable infrastructure, and unique, northern and challenging training location. Its strategic location also allows for rapid deployment to the North Atlantic and Arctic.
More importantly, with the release yesterday of Canada’s Defence Industrial Strategy, 5 Wing is strategically positioned to support Canada’s national prosperity, economic security and Arctic sovereignty. CFB Goose Bay has been identified as one of four northern locations receiving infrastructure upgrades to enhance Arctic defense capabilities. With billions of dollars of additional defence investment identified, the LNCC and regional stakeholders will aim to clearly and consistently demonstrate 5 Wing’s capability to adapt and expand to support the Government’s increased defence activities.
Not only does the Strategy aim to maximize growth, job creation and economic benefits for Canadians, defence revenues for small and medium-sized businesses are projected to grow by more than $5.1B annually. Communities and businesses within Central Labrador have long supported operations at 5 Wing and are experienced and equipped to assist the Wing with an increase in defence activities and new opportunities.
For decades, the LNCC offers its unwavering support for 5 Wing and recognizes its potential for further growth and development. Given the release of the strategy and national commitment to economic security and Arctic sovereignty, the LNCC is committed to meeting with Government to further showcase CFB Goose Bay’s strategic alignment with the Defence Industrial Strategy.
