Today is an exciting day for Newfoundland and Labrador as the province reaches agreements with Quebec and the federal government to develop Churchill Falls and Gull Island. With involvement from all three parties, it is clear this deal is of national significance and is a nation-building energy project for the country.
“Stakeholders across Labrador including the LNCC have long been advocating for energy security and reliability for the region,” says LNCC CEO Julianne Griffin. “With access to more power and with more transmission under this deal, Labrador is better positioned to realize its full economic potential. This focus on long-term energy planning will assist regional stakeholders to attract new investment, expand existing business operations, build essential infrastructure, and support additional projects. Overall, this agreement could unlock our regional competitiveness with expanded and reliable power capacity.”
As the LNCC and its members look forward to learning more information regarding this ambitious deal, we will continue to advocate for local procurement and employment opportunities for Labrador. Any agreement – and certainly an agreement of this significance – must ensure benefits derived from a resource in Labrador is equitably shared and directly supports the long-term needs of Labrador’s businesses and communities.
Regional economic understanding and reconciliation must also be foundational to Labrador’s energy future needs. This requires genuine equity in decision-making, expanded procurement opportunities for local businesses, and transparent, accountable partnerships with Indigenous communities. As a Chamber, our focus remains on local procurement, job creation and training, infrastructure opportunities, and business growth across Labrador.
With strong collaboration and engagement with Labrador communities and industry, this agreement could allow regional economic benefits to stay in Labrador, and must respond directly to local challenges, support local business development, strengthen supply chains, and build regional capacity. We must also ensure strong investment in regional infrastructure to adequately support the community in addressing anticipated impacts during project development.
We must now move respectfully but swiftly to seize this historic moment.
