Michael Chubbs
Community Navigator, Welcoming Communities Initiative
Born and raised in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, Michael is deeply rooted in the community.
After graduating from Memorial University with a joint major in Political Science and Communication Studies, Michael went on to the University of King’s College, where he earned his Bachelor of Journalism.
After a stint as an intern, Michael worked at The Newfoundland Herald, where he wrote, managed social media marketing strategies, and acted as a resident photographer. Working alongside their Managing editor, Michael was responsible for writing original articles, and photographed a variety of local events like George Street Fest, Iceberg Alley, a press conference with the Prime Minister, and an adventure tourism trip to central NL in partnership with Adventure Central Newfoundland — among others. He also developed the “This Week in The Herald” series, which he produced to promote each new issue.
Since he started in July, Michael has been applying his experience at The Herald to further develop the LNCC’s Community Welcome Guide, originally produced by his predecessor, Luke McLaren. Going forward, Michael will be conducting consultations to support employers’ ability to attract and retain newcomer talent, while pursuing other initiatives that further that goal.
