More than $2,600 Raised by Expo Labrador Participants for Scholarship Fund

Participants of Expo Labrador 2011 arrived in the Big Land last week for the annual conference and trade show with open notebooks and open wallets.

Hundreds of visitors and members of the regional business community flocked to the E.J. Broomfield Arena to attend the trade show and conference sessions related to Labrador’s mega-projects, mining, and regional preparedness for large-scale development. Social events took place in the evenings including a Wild West Saloon Theme Night where a jail-and-bail was set-up to help raise money for the scholarship fund.

“This year we decided to take things one step further with the Expo Labrador Scholarship Fund, says Ernie McLean, chairperson of Expo Labrador. “A mock jail was set-up where participants could pay money to arrest each other with all proceeds going to the scholarship fund. The response was incredible.

More than $2,100 was raised in less than three hours during Theme Night, as well as $475.00 that was raised on the trade show floor that day.

“We truly had no idea that the mock jail would be such a hit, explains McLean. “We’re so touched by the response and generosity from the participants, and we’re excited to provide graduating students with financial assistance and perhaps an incentive to explore a career in the resource development field. There are countless opportunities for work in this field, especially in the Labrador region.

The Expo Labrador Scholarship is intended to provide financial support to two (2) Grade XII (Level 3) high school senior students who have demonstrated an interest in and a commitment to a career in an industrial skilled trade, or a university-level program related to the resource development field. Congratulations again to the Expo Labrador 2011 Scholarship recipients and recent graduates of Mealy Mountain Collegiate, Ms. Hillary Yetman and Ms. Danielle Gear.
