Women in Resource Development Corporation (WRDC)

Women in Resource Development Corporation (WRDC) began operations in 1997. Located in the North Star Building at 114 Hamilton River Road, Happy Valley-Goose Bay, WRDC is a non-profit organization committed to increasing women's participation in trades and technology.

WRDC’s key activities include, but are not limited to:
career exploration programs;
career development and employment assistance services;
recruitment and retention consultation and training for employers; and
collaborating with key stakeholders such as training institutions, employers, labour unions, government departments and community groups to identify solutions to issues commonly identified by women in trades and technology.

Ranging throughout the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, WRDC employs 1 person in Happy Valley-Goose Bay, 1 in Corner Brook, 1 in Clarenville and 11 in St. John’s, for a total of 14 employees.

Much like many other organizations, WRDC also faces day to day challenges. The closure of their physical offices due to Covid-19, meant that their drop-in program had ceased.  Also, the WRDC’s regular home visitations with clients have been cancelled, including all Community events and activities. Many women participate in these events and they are a huge part of the ongoing promotion of the WRDC programs and services.

As a non-for-profit organization focused on women entering training or employment in skilled trades and technology, our support at the Community level is focused on that target group. WRDC networks with all local, provincial, and national organizations that support women to reduce barriers to employment and training.

Even during Covid 19, the WRDC is very focused on recognizing and supporting Indigenous and non-Indigenous women, newcomers, members of our LGBTQ2S+ community, young girls, and youth.
Their community events may be on hold, but they are still staying connected with their clients!

Proud moments can be big or small, for any organization. For the WRDC, they are proud to have maintained employment during these unprecedented times. WRDC supports their employees by allowing them the opportunity to transition to a working in a home environment. This has allowed them to continue to offer their programs and services via telephone, email, or video.
It is evident that the WRDC is there to serve their clients and ensure success amongst our communities. When asked why they had joined the Labrador North Chamber of Commerce, they were proud to say the Chamber is there to ensure they are connected to as many organizations and industries as possible to help promote their programs and services.
