SmartICE Sea Ice Monitoring & Information Inc. (SmartICE) is a northern social enterprise focused on empowering communities through technology to adapt to unpredictable sea-ice changes resulting from climate change. This innovative and award-winning technology is the World’s first climate change adaptation tool that integrates on-ice technology, remote sensing and Inuit Knowledge to generate near real-time information on sea-ice conditions. It is currently operating in Nain (Nunatsiavut) and Pond Inlet (Nunavut).

As a result of changing climate, northern communities are faced with unprecedented sea-ice conditions that have elevated travel safety concerns, exposed them to greater injury (or death) and decreased access to country food and culturally important practices. Through technological and scientific innovation, SmartICE reduces individual and community risk, while building resilience to rapidly changing sea-ice conditions.

SmartICE maintains a network of in-situ and mobile sensors that measure and transmit sea- ice thickness data from community trails. It also maps sea-ice surface conditions from satellite imagery to inform safe travel choices. Combined with novel information technology SmartICE generates solutions and accessible products that match the needs of community users, from Inuit hunters to recreational ice users.

The SmartICE information system directly benefits public safety, food security, and health and wellbeing. In addition, SmartICE enables and supports economic activities for communities and industries alike.
